ABOUT NAI LERT
Phraya Bhakdinorasreth
(Lert Sreshthaputra)
22 JUNE 1872 – 15 DECEMBER 1945
Phraya Bhakdinorasreth
(Lert Sreshthaputra)
“Nai Lert” or Phraya Bhakdinorasreth was born in his family’s home near Wat Bophitphimook Bridge on June 22, 1872, from a distinguished background; his father, Chuen Sreshthaputra, was one of the sons of Luang Prasertwanit and a nephew of Phra Prasertwanit, founder of the Sresthatputra family. After studying at Suan Ananta School (including English language study), Nai Lert started working and ended up becoming partner at the Singapore Strait Company (later to become Fraser and Neave) by the age of 20.
At the age of 22, Nai Lert started an imported goods business called Nai Lert Store and developed the first Ice Factory in the country. The factory’s site is located in the area of Sukhumvit Rd between Soi 5 & 7 (both Sois were named Soi Nai Lert).
Though Nai Lert kept his headquarters near the original shop, he expanded to other businesses in other parts of the city. He developed the Hotel de la Paix thereby creating the first hotel property of the family business. Nai Lert also expanded his business into transportation business; he introduced the first bus services in Thailand in 1913 to serve Bangkok commuters and later expanded the business into the first taxi service using imported cars, the White Boat Company operating pleasure boats, seagoing vessels and a public transportation service along the Klong Saen Saep from Pratunam. He also launched an even more innovative venture, the White Bus Company, with its first route running between Pratunam and Yotse Bridge, followed later by several other routes, including one to Silom Road. An innovation for commuters from the countryside was that passengers travelling by ferry could use the same ticket when transferring to the bus at Pratunam.
Nai Lert was also at the origin of the development of the Ploenchit area where he acquired a large piece of land in 1915 and created one of the first developments in Bagnkok by master planning the area and selling off parts of the land as individual plots. This included the existing British Embassy site on Ploenchit which was sold to the British Government in 1922.
